The city of Ocoee will honor and remember the 101st anniversary of the Ocoee 1920 Election Day Massacre on Saturday, Nov. 6, and Sunday, Nov. 7. The public is invited to attend.
On Saturday, 60 members of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club will host a Julius “July” Perry Memorial Highway Honor Ride. The club will start the ride at Oakland Avenue Charter School, 456 Oakland Ave., at 11 a.m. The ride will end around 11:30 a.m. at Bill Breeze Park, 125 N. Lakeshore Drive.
Immediately following the honor ride, Ocoee Remembers will be held at the park from noon until 3 p.m. There will be a keynote speaker, remarks from elected officials, food trucks and music. WFTV news anchor Daralene Jones will serve as mistress of ceremonies.
On Sunday, HighPoint Church will host Ocoee Remembers to honor the victims and descendants. The ceremony will be held at the Ocoee Lakeshore Center, 125 N. Lakeshore Drive, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. P. Donnell Jones from Grace Covenant Church in Washington, D.C., will be the keynote speaker. There will be musical performances, reading of the victims’ names, ringing of the church bell and a silent candlelight memorial walk.
