Student raises $60K for cleft palate surgeries

Trinity Prep sophomore Miles Saffran of Winter Park has been named a Distinguished Finalist by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding volunteerism. Miles has helped to raise more than $60,000 to fund three medical trips to Mexico, where he has served as the surgical youth coordinator for cleft lip and palate repair for Florida Hospital’s mission trips.

Rollins’ outstanding grads

Rollins Evening Program (Hamilton Holt School), College of Arts & Sciences and College of Professional Studies commencement ceremonies on May 12 and May 13 will honor nearly 600 students. Notable graduates include Traci Campana, who was diagnosed with multiple disabilities as a child (including cerebral palsy, mild autism and multiple sclerosis). Doctors said she would never be able to attend mainstream classes. This weekend, Traci graduates from Rollins psychology program with a 4.0 GPA. Choirchimes perform

Eric Levine, Jewish Academy of Orlando’s music teacher, and his Choirchimes Ensemble hit a high note when they performed for the school on Friday, April 20, with visiting high school guests Pioneer Valley Christian School (PVCS) from Springfield, Mass. Trinity alumnus wins fencing title

Trinity Prep alumnus Jonathan Yergler (Class of 2009) of Winter Park, now a junior at Princeton, recently won the NCAA title in fencing. Athletic success seems to run in the Yergler family. His sister Katie, a senior at Trinity Prep, recently committed to play softball at Wheaton College in Illinois.

Maitland student shines in NYC

Captivating audiences with a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Alison Sigalow from Maitland placed as a semi-finalist at the 29th annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. The competition was held at Lincoln Center in New York City for 58 winners of ESU Branch competitions nationwide.

Vote Winter Park as most beautiful small town

The “Best of the Road” campaign presented by Rand McNally and USA Today has launched the second annual search for the best small town in America. Visit bestoftheroad.com to vote for Winter Park in the “most beautiful” category. Voting ends on Tuesday, May 15.

Call for artists extended

The Art on the Green 2012 “call for artists” deadline has been extended to Friday, June 1. Art on the Green is a juried exhibition of eight sculptures in downtown Winter Park. Visit cityofwinterpark.org and click on the Art on the Green button.

Winter Park Playhouse adds shows

The Winter Park Playhouse will add four performances to its schedule for each production in their 2012-2013 series. The new performance schedule will include:

• A Thursday evening preview at 7:30 p.m. opening week of each production. Tickets are $15.

• Two additional Thursday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $28.

• A “Wacky Wednesday” evening at 7:30 p.m. closing week of each production. Tickets are $28.
