Dr. Phillips YMCA celebrates veterans

Veterans of all ages and several wars gathered for an inaugural tribute brunch Nov. 8 at the YMCA in Dr. Phillips. Guest speakers presented information on various services and programs available to all veterans, urging them to seek assistance when they need it, before they reach dire straits. Keynote speaker retired Lt. Gen. Jay Montgomery Garner detailed the history of Veterans’ Day, including the initial Armistice Day after World War I and the change of name to Veterans’ Day in 1954. All attendees received special commemorative coins honoring each branch of the nation’s military.
