ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Ariel Colon

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball when I was 5, and I would say I got into it on my own — no one played basketball in my family.

Do you have a favorite player or team?

Lebron (James). He’s my favorite player, and I don’t have a team, so wherever he goes I go — best player.

Do you play any other sports?

No, but if I had a choice — if basketball didn’t work out — I’d say tennis. I like to watch tennis. Tennis is hard.

Do you have a favorite memory playing basketball here?

I do. I have to say our first game here against West Orange. We came out with a bang. I felt like we played well, and that’s something we have to be consistent on, bring that to the other games.

What about basketball do you like the most?

I just like being part of a team, and doing something not on your own but as a team makes it more fun. Being able to bond with each other means something.

What are your plans for after high school?

I definitely want to go to college. I want to study health and sciences. I would like to be a pediatric nurse. That’s what I want to do after my career in basketball.

Are there any colleges you’re looking at yet?

No, I’m undecided right now.

Do you have a favorite class in school?

My favorite class would have to be physics, just because of my teacher. Out of all my teachers, she keeps us entertained and she teaches at the same time, so it’s pretty fun.

What do you like to do in free time?

I don’t like to go out much. I like to spend time with my family, go to my godmother’s house or just catch a movie with my dad.

Is there a movie you’ve seen or looked forward to recently?

I’ve heard “Creed” was good, that new boxing movie, but I haven’t seen it yet. I haven’t been to the movies in a while.
