In 2012, Windermere resident Scott Holmgren and Colonel James (Jim) Wilhite had a story to tell, but they were still looking for the best way to tell it.
After attending the GI Film Festival, known as "Sundance for the Troops,” Holmgren and Wilhite decided to create a documentary.
Now, the GI Film Festival has selected their documentary, “We Answered the Call,” to be shown at this year’s GIFF, held from May 21-29 in Washington, D.C.
“We Answered the Call” tells Wilhite’s story. In 2004, he was called to active duty, after spending 35 years as a member of the Army Reserve and more than 20 years as a college professor. His mission was lofty: Build a military school for Afghan students using West Point as a model. He saw the mission through, despite funding challenges and other obstacles.
Holmgren met Wilhite at a West Point Parents Club of Central Florida luncheon, soon after his son was accepted into United States Military Academy at West Point. After hearing his story, Holmgren wanted to make it into a movie.
