WINTER GARDEN The West Orange boys lacrosse has emerged from a tough stretch of games to begin the 2016 season with a 4-2 record, much to the delight of veteran head coach Bill Baker.
In particular, three of the Warriors' first four opponents to open the 2016 slate are programs expected to be very competitive — Boone (3-1), Martin County (3-3) and Bishop Moore (3-2). Of those three games, West Orange won two — beating Martin County and Bishop Moore and falling to Boone by just one point, 10-9.
"We've got a very tough schedule this year," Baker said. "Coming out of that group of games 2-1, with a group that's young, I'm very happy with."
The Warriors have also defeated East Ridge (0-2) and Edgewater (1-3) and fell to Timber Creek (5-1) Feb. 23, 13-9.
West Orange is set to face off against two teams with losing records, Wekiva (0-3) and Hagerty (2-4), before embarking on a brutal stretch of the middle and end of the season that will include Montverde (4-1), Lake Minneola (5-0), Apopka (4-1) and Winter Park (5-1).
Junior Daniel Luette figures his team has a good shot so long as it continues to improve.
"I think we've played great as a team, overall, but we really haven't lived up to our potential," Luette said. "So I'm excited to see that."
