Bailey Spragg, a Windermere native, was recognized for his good play on the hardwood for the Covenant College men’s basketball team. The freshman for the Scots was named the USA South Conference Rookie of the Week Jan. 18 — the first player in Covenant’s history to be recognized as such. Spragg averaged 14 points, three assists and 2.5 rebounds in two wins for the Scots last week, including a career-high 17 points in a 79-77 win over William Peace Jan. 15.
Winter Garden resident Steve Crane returned recently from the FootGolf World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he made a little bit of history. Competing for Team USA, Crane recorded the first hole-in-one in the history of the FootGolf World Cup Jan. 5. The ace was part of a championship effort for Team USA.
For a second year, the Winter Garden Squeeze and Winter Garden Little League will partner to host a “Dust off the Rust” Preseason Clinic. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at Winter Garden Little League, 119 S. Park Ave. Participants must be registered for the 2016 spring season at Winter Garden Little League. The Legacy Charter soccer team added another first to a growing list this season, winning its first district playoff game Jan. 18. In the opening round of the Class 2A District 4 Tournament, the Eagles defeated Faith Christian in overtime, 2-1. The winning header was scored by Caleb Enright.
Legacy was eliminated in the district semifinals by The First Academy, 3-1.
West Orange senior Eddie McDoom has decommitted from the University of Oregon. The highly recruited receiver confirmed the decision on his Twitter account Jan. 17 and is expected to visit the University of Michigan soon. Reports suggest McDoom’s desire to visit Michigan led to Oregon’s pulling his scholarship offer. The Wolverines, who have offered McDoom a scholarship, practiced at West Orange High for a week leading up to the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl and are thought to be a leading contender for his commitment leading up to National Signing Day Feb. 3.
West Orange junior baseball standout DeAndre Shelton verbally committed to play his college baseball at the University of Alabama Jan. 7.
Shelton, who has played infield and outfield for the Warriors, also plays for the Orlando Scorpions travel baseball organization.
The West Orange High softball team will host a skills clinic at its on-campus facility from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at the high school, 1625 Beulah Road, Winter Garden.
The clinic is intended or players ages 8 to 12 and covers conditioning, pitching, hitting and fielding. Cost is $40 per participant; lunch is included.

Windermere resident and former Major League Baseball superstar Ken Griffey Jr. was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Jan. 6, receiving 99.32% of votes — a record.
During his career, Griffey played for the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox, belting 630 home runs with 1,836 RBI and hitting .284.
