In the wake of the shooting at Pulse nightclub in downtown Orlando early Sunday morning that left at least 50 dead and 53 injured, the need for blood donations in Central Florida has skyrocketed, and people from all over Central Florida have taken the time to wait in hours-long lines to help however they can.
Although the influx in blood donations may seem significant, there is still more needed, and multiple locations and bloodmobiles are open throughout the week to accept donations. Some of the closest locations to Winter Garden have been listed below.
To be eligible to donate blood, you must be 16 years of age or older; however, 16-year-old donors must have a parent-signed permission form. Pregnant women and people with cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure or anemia are ineligible to donate. Additionally, those who have gotten tattoos or body piercings in the last 12 months may have to wait before donating. Anyone who has gotten tattoos at a non-state-licensed facility, or those who have not been pierced with single-use equipment, are ineligible to donate for 12 months.
To make an appointment to donate blood, visit oneblood.org/donate-now or call 1-888-9-DONATE (1-888-936-6283). For more information on giving blood, visit oneblood.org.
