Hundreds of thousands of folks shop, eat and gather in downtown Winter Garden every year — but the Plant Street corridor wasn't always as crowded as it it nowadays.

A.B. Newton is the man who first brought life to the city at the turn of the 20th century. Newton Park, on Lake Apopka, is named for this early Winter Garden resident, who is affectionately known as "Mr. First" because he served as the city's first merchant, newspaper editor and mayor, among other things.
