APOPKA The Apopka boys basketball team continued its strong start to the season Nov. 26 by concluding a sweep of its two games in the Metro vs. Florida Challenge — an event put on each year by Blue Darters coach Scott Williams and Wekiva High public address announcer Mark Bartschi.
Apopka (3-0) utilized its defense and some timely shooting to subdue guest Winter Haven, 70-53.
"I thought we did a good job with our spacing — we found guys and we made some shots," Williams said. "We haven't shot it well in stretches early this year, but we believe we have some guys that are shot-makers."
Highlighting a balanced effort on the offensive end of the floor, four Blue Darters finished the contest in double-digits scoring: Travis Henderson (16 points), Terence McClain (14 points), Rodney Lubin (12 points) and Nathan Louis (10 points).
Henderson also recorded a game-high 10 rebounds to complete his night with a double-double.
One of the more respected and veteran coaches in all of Central Florida, Williams said afterward that though he was pleased for his team to earn a win, there is a long way to go before the Blue Darters are where they need to be.
"We have very high expectations for these guys — we know what's inside of them and we know what they're capable of," Williams said. "The inconsistency that we're seeing can be very frustrating."
Competing in the FHSAA's Class 9A, District 3 with Evans, West Orange and rival Wekiva, Williams know his team will have its work cut out for it to make the state playoffs — no matter its record.
"Our district is very unforgiving," Williams said. "We're 3-0 and I don't think anybody would say we're anything other than the fourth-best team in our district."
