APOPKA Including two preseason contests, the Wekiva boys basketball team had won its first four games by a combined 81 points ahead of its matchup with CFCA Nov. 26 at the Metro vs. Florida Challenge.

The Eagles, a team that has its sights set on a run at the Class 2A crown this spring, proceeded to give the Class 9A Mustangs all they could handle in what eventually ended as a 59-57 victory for Wekiva (3-0).

"This is the first game that's been close and we had to learn how to finish the game," Mustangs head coach Gersino Lubin said. "What I learned from it was trusting the process, trusting what we do every day in practice."

What was probably hard to anticipate is just how dynamic CFCA's star point guard Dante Treacy would be — and how difficult he would prove to defend. In the absence of standout forward De'Lazarus Keys, who is out with a hand injury, Treacy exploded for a game-high 34 points.

"No. 11(Treacy) is an incredible scorer, he attacks the basket well," Lubin said. "We allowed him to go off. ... I think that was the grind of the game — we never could really pull away, because we just got complacent."

Wekiva was led by another double-double from Paul Reed (18 points, 12 rebounds) and double-digit scoring efforts from Ruben Sheppard (11 points) and Keon Morris (10 points).
