WINTER GARDEN To prepare her fourth-grade students for the FSA math test, Micaela Thomas created her own version of the Olympics for her students. The Whispering Oak Elementary School students were grouped into teams - U.S.A., China, Brazil, Germany and Jamaica - and competing against each other for gold medals during an outdoor, Olympics-styled competition. The games involved solving a variety of math problems, including division, fractions and geometry, for points.
“This is a day where they’re still reviewing (the material) but not in a traditional setting,” Thomas said.
At the end of the competition, Jamaica and Brazil had tied for the most gold medals, earning the two teams a pizza party.
