LAKELAND In the program’s first ever appearance in a state semifinal game, the Olympia Titans girls basketball team came up short against Boca Raton 58-45 Feb. 24.
The Titans trailed by 12 at halftime and, despite cutting that deficit to seven points early in the third quarter, the lead for Boca Raton eventually ballooned to 23 points. Not a team to throw in the towel, Olympia battled back late in the fourth quarter and got within striking distance — drawing within 11 points — but ultimately ran out of time on an impressive season.
Brianna Richardson led the Titans with a team-high 14 points and Anjelie Tirone had snagged 11 rebounds. Senior captain Taylor Hair recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat.
Boca Raton went on to win the FHSAA Class 9A State Championship the next day with a 45-42 victory over Miami’s Ferguson High.
Olympia finished the season with a 15-7 record.
