Sports Spotlight - West Orange Times & Observer: Nathan Rodriguez

The Legacy Charter boys basketball team (7-10) has won three of its past four games, and sophomore point guard Nathan Rodriguez scored 19 points respective in victories against First Academy-Leesburg and Foundation Academy, helping propel the Eagles to victory.

You had two big games against First Academy-Leesburg and Foundation Academy. How did that feel?

It felt really good, you know, just going out there and playing aggressive and helping my team get better.

What do you think you have improved on the most from your freshman year to now?

Mainly my confidence. Last year, when I was on the court, I was afraid to play the game. This year, my coach has been telling me “just go out there and have fun — play with confidence.”

How do you think the team has done so far this season?

We’ve got some nice wins later on in the season. We’ve been doing good working as a team.

Which remaining game are you most excited for?

Probably our next game against Orangewood. We haven’t beat them in a while and it would feel really good to beat that team.

Who is the NBA player you look up to the most?

I look up to Dwyane Wade the most. I like that when he came out of college, I feel like he had a lot of intensity. He played the game with a lot speed and passion.

What’s the best advice coach Matthew Post has given you or the team?

He’s just told us to always play with confidence and to have fun on the court. 

What do you want to do for a career?

I want to make it professional in the NBA, but if that doesn’t happen, I like music so maybe I’d like to be a musician. I played the trumpet for three years.
