Mya Wood is going into eighth grade at Ocoee Middle School, but her skills on the volleyball court have already caught the attention of several college scouts. She's already received one scholarship offer from Marquette University and plans to attend the university's volleyball camp later this summer. Having played the sport for several years, Wood is known for her abilities to play in any position on the court.

How long have you played volleyball?

I’ve been playing for seven years. I enjoy that it’s fun and exciting and hard work. And it’s exciting that I’ll be able to get a scholarship once I’m actually in twelfth grade.

What position is your favorite to play?

Passer back row. There’s a lot of passion there and getting to go for the ball.

How surprised were you when you found out that college scouts were looking at you?

For the first one, yeah I was surprised. Now I wish I was already in twelfth grade and ready to go to college.

If you could go to any college, which would you pick?

Stanford is definitely my number one.

What are some of your goals for next year?

I want to be more of the number one player. I want more scouts watching me so I can get ready for twelfth grade.

What skill on the volleyball court do you feel you need to work on more?

Setting, because I want to get my hands and feet under the ball better.

What is the most challenging part of the game?

Trying to make a good play. If I don’t, I feel like I upset my teammates.

What is the best advice you’ve gotten from your coaches?

When I mess up and make a face, my coach tells me to forget the play and focus on the next play.

What is your favorite subject in school?

Math. I’m just good at it, and it’s easy for me.

What is your favorite movie?

“A Madea Halloween.” That was really funny.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I wish I could read peoples minds because I’m always wondering what they’re thinking about.
