If the youngsters from Dr. Phillips Little League flexed some muscle last week — winning both the 11-year-old and 10-year-old tournaments for District 14 — then the ballplayers from Winter Garden Little League weren’t far off.
In two tournament fields that also included respective teams from Windermere, South Lake and Ocoee, Winter Garden advanced to the championship game in each. There, WGLL’s 11-year-old All-Stars were soundly defeated by Dr. Phillips, 9-2, and the 10-year-old All-Stars team lost 11-10.
The small margin of defeat in the 10-year-old championship game was particularly impressive, because Winter Garden rallied from a 10-1 deficit in the third inning. From there, the team from WGLL scored 10 of the next 11 runs, but Dr. Phillips ultimately was able to hold on for the exciting victory.
The WGLL 10-year-olds went 5-1 in the tournament, overall, including a win over Dr. Phillips in pool play. The tournament took place at Ocoee Little League.
The WGLL 11-year-olds, meanwhile, went 3-2 — with both losses coming at the hands of Dr. Phillips. The tournament took place at Winter Garden Little League.
Ocoee Little League’s 10-year-old All-Stars team went 2-3 during the District 14 Tournament and the league did not field an 11-year-old team.
The winning teams from Dr. Phillips Little League advance to Section 5 Tournaments to earn a chance to compete in the state tournaments.
