A brick road constructed in 1915 is finally getting the historic recognition it deserves. Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey held a small ceremony March 1 to unveil the green permanent marker on the road that connects Plant Street to the east and Tildenville School Road to the west, one half mile north of West Colonial Drive.

Brick Road was the historic State Road 22 that traveled from Oakland through Winter Garden and Ocoee to Orlando.

Tildenville resident Glenda Loew has fought to get a permanent marker placed at the end of the .6-mile-long road.

Dr. Adam Ware, of the Orange County Regional History Center, said stretches of brick road such as this are rare.

“It’s so good to know we’ve preserved a piece of the past,” said Scott Boyd, former District 1 commissioner for Orange County, who was on hand for the marker dedication.

The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation and the county’s Regional History Center worked together on the project.
