It was an absolute battle of the defenses on Thursday night at Showalter Field in Winter Park as the Wildcats (3-0) took the close 10-6 win over Wekiva (2-1).
Outside of a touchdown by Wekiva's Birthel Bridges with just under a minute left in the first quarter, and a 32-yard field goal just before the half by Wildcats' kicker Alec Boe, both offenses struggled to make much progress up field.
In a game that felt like a matchup of SEC teams, with defense taking completely over, it felt as though maybe no one else would score – that was until things got crazy in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats got a chance to do some damage after the Mustangs fumbled away the ball on their own 36 yard line, but Boe's field goal was block and recovered on the three-yard line by the Mustangs.
After recovering the ball, the Mustangs managed to get around the 20-yard line, where on a 4th-and-long they successfully pulled a fake punt to get the first down. But just a few plays later, Wekiva fumbled the ball yet again, setting up the Wildcats up around the 32-yard line.
A few plays later, quarterback Cameron LeGree dropped in a dime to receiver Brian Gomez for the go ahead touchdown with just 40 seconds to go. A Michael Lopez pick on the Mustangs' last drive would seal the game for the Wildcats in a hard fought win.
Next up for the Wildcats' is an away game at Colonial (0-3).
