Teams of fourth and fifth graders from about 15 different Orange County elementary schools enjoyed a fun-filled morning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at the third annual Rube Goldberg Competition on Saturday, April 7, at West Orange High School.
Students who participated in the competition started working on their Rube Goldberg machines in November. A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption that uses a chain of events to accomplish a simple task in a complex manner. Building the machines exposes the students to elements of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
In the fourth grade competition, Westbrooke Elementary School’s team 17 won third place; Hunter’s Creek Elementary School’s team 4 won second place; and Rock Springs Elementary School’s team 12 won first place.
In the fifth grade competition, Independence Elementary School’s team 32 won third place, Hunter’s Creek Elementary School’s team 28 won second place; and Hunter’s Creek Elementary School’s team 29 won first place.
