On April 23, West Orange High baseball alum Austin Gomber had one of the best starts of his professional career — the left-handed pitcher struck out 16 batters over eight shutout innings for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds in a 3-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs.
Six days later, on April 29, the former Warrior got the news he had been waiting for his whole life — the St. Louis Cardinals called up Gomber to join the Big League-club.
Gomber will wear No. 68 and, according to MLB.com's Matt Kelly, will be utilized in the Cardinals' bullpen. As a reliever, Gomber could see Big League action as soon as today's 1:35 p.m. (ET) game at Pittsburgh.
Gomber, 24, has pitched well for Triple-A Memphis this season — in four starts, he has a 2.45 ERA spanning 25.2 innings with 27 strikeouts. In Double-A Springfield in 2017, the former Warrior earned 10 wins and had a 3.34 ERA.
Observer Preps caught up with Gomber back in December when the left-handed pitcher was added to the Cardinals' 40-man roster ahead of Spring Training. That article can be read HERE.
Gomber joins former West Orange Warriors Mason Williams and Nolan Fontana as alumni that have gotten the call-up to "The Show."
Williams was called up by the New York Yankees in 2015 and is currently playing for the Louisville Bats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Fontana was called up by the Los Angeles Angels in 2017 and is currently playing for the Angels' Triple-A affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees.
