Sports Spotlight - Windermere Observer: Dayton Romig

A senior for the second-year Windermere High baseball program, infielder Dayton Romig got a career milestone out of the way recently by committing to Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina. Romig had a strong summer of travel ball for Power Baseball and is excited to help lead the Wolverines back to the playoffs next spring.

How excited are you to have committed to a collegiate program?

Going into the summer before senior year, and not really getting many looks, you think about, “Is it going to be my last year playing baseball?” So, finding a school not only do I really like, but the program and the school itself is amazing. 

How well did you do in travel ball this summer?

We did the national tournaments in Georgia, and I think I definitely played nearly at my best, if not at my best.

What’s been your favorite out-of-state destination for travel ball?

I think LakePoint (Sporting Community) in Emerson, Georgia. Not only is it a very nice sports complex, but (also) you get to see kids and coaches from all around the country.

What was it like being part of a new program last spring?

It was kind of difficult at first, because all the kids coming together, most of us had never played on the same team. But I think we handled it really well, and our junior class had to handle it as a senior class — and I think we handled it really well.

What’s your favorite uniform combo for the Wolverines?

I like the lime green, “poison” jersey and the navy, stirrup pants with our white hat.

What’s the team’s biggest strength?

The pitching staff, for sure. We have (commits) to FSU, UCF and a lot of good arms. I think it’s going to definitely lead us to more wins this year.

You have a sister, Kalie Romig, who plays college softball for Ave Maria University. Has that inspired you to compete in college, too?

My sister definitely inspired when she got to college — it really made me want to get to college, just like she did. She said it’s really fun up there. 

What’s your favorite subject in school?

Math — I’ve always been good with numbers as a kid. My mom likes telling the story that when I was 4 or 5, and she would read me books, I would just want to read through the numbers of the pages and not read the words.

Tell us about your interest in golf.

Golf is a big hobby of mine. My favorite course around here is Panther Lake at Orange County National — it’s pretty close to a pro course. Very underrated. And I would say my favorite golfer is Rory McElroy. He’s a small guy, like me, and he can hit the ball pretty far.
