WINTER GARDEN The boys soccer teams from Foundation Academy and Orangewood Christian took the field Wednesday afternoon for a playoff thriller, taking all of regulation and three more minutes of overtime to decide the match.
In the end, Juan Pablo Ruiz's second goal of the game ended the match in overtime, giving Foundation Academy (14-3) a 2-1 victory in the FHSAA Class 1A, Region 1 Quarterfinals.
The victory represented the first playoff win in program history for Foundation Academy, which is in only its second playoff appearance.
The two teams battled to a draw through the first half. Ruiz scored his first goal in the second half on an assist from Jay Garver. With time running out, though, Orangewood (11-5-1) would score to force overtime.
There, Ruiz scored again, this time on an assist from Luke Chase.
Foundation will now prepare to face The Master's Academy in the regional semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday in Oviedo.
