HORIZON WEST Maddox Pine wasted no time in running a lap on the track at the park named for his father.
Moments after he, his brother Ryker, sister Haley, and mother Bridget took part in cutting the ribbon for Deputy Scott Pine Community Park, the youth sprinted off to take part in the “first lap” on the state-of-the-art rubberized track — with members of the Windermere High track team joining him and cheering him on.
Maddox’s lap is a reminder of the hope that the park — which also houses the football stadium for Windermere High — will be an enduring reminder of the memory of Deputy Scott Pine, who was slain in the line of duty Feb. 11, 2014.
“We don’t want the memory of Deputy Scott Pine to ever perish,” Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said at the dedication.
Jacobs was one of a handful of speakers at the ceremony, a list which also included Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings, District 1 Orange County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey, former Orange County Commissioner Scott Boyd and Orange County School Board Member Pam Gould.
The park includes a bench with a plaque honoring the fallen officer — words that Demings shared with those in attendance.
