DR. PHILLIPS When the Dr. Phillips girls soccer team took the field to host Harmony Tuesday night, it had been 20 days since the last time the Panthers had last completed a match.
The layoff — and its effects — did not go unnoticed by head coach Donny George, but the Panthers (14-0) nevertheless earned a 2-1 victory over the visiting Longhorns (13-3-2).
"Our last game was two-and-a-half weeks ago and ... it shows," George said. "I could see the girls and determination was coming through."
Stephanie Oliveira scored first for Dr. Phillips by way of a header in the first half. Later, in the second half, Carmel de Oliveira scored on a long strike to double the lead to 2-0.
The Panthers were nearing their 11th shutout of the season — they were three seconds away, in fact — when Harmony scored a late goal. It was the first goal conceded by Dr. Phillips that did not come on a penalty kick or free kick.
"The positive is we won — we still won and that's what champions do," George said. "We still beat a very, very good team tonight."
