APOPKA The Dr. Phillips girls soccer team's 2-0 win over rival West Orange at Apopka High early Wednesday evening was significant in a handful of ways.
The Panthers' 12th shutout of the season advanced them to Friday's District 5A-4 Championship Game.
It also earned Dr. Phillips a place in the FHSAA Class 5A Regional Playoffs, which will begin February 6.
Finally, the victory represented a milestone for a program that is experiencing a breakout season. The district semifinal win improved the Panthers to 17-1-1 on the season — with win No. 17 breaking the program's previous record for wins in a season.
Chloe Washington and Stephanie Oliveira each scored goals for Dr. Phillips, with Carmel de Oliveira assisting on both goals.
The Panthers will play tournament host Apopka Friday at 7 p.m. for the district title.
