Aspiring quarterbacks big and small gathered at West Orange High July 7 for the return of the Orlando QB Shootout, an all-day camp and competition put together by former West Orange and Olympia offensive coordinator Collin Drafts.
Drafts, a former quarterback in the Arena Football League, brought the event back after a two-year hiatus. Drafts, who was the head coach at East River High after leaving West Orange, relocated to South Carolina in 2017.
The event has an impressive list of past winners, including former Olympia star Deondre Francois and former West Orange star Woody Barrett.
In addition to quarterbacks, the camp welcomes youth and high school-aged wide receivers. Drafts partnered with Lo Wood and Excel Speed, among other local organizations, and a host of local alumni came back to serve as instructors — including former Dr. Phillips standout Marvin Washington, currently a quarterback for UConn.
Following the instructional portion of the camp, there was a competition.
Winners included: Overall winner — Nigel Scott (Heritage High); Varsity MVP — Sean Robles (Wekiva High); and Varsity Runner-Up — Brian Maurer (West Port High).
