WINDERMERE GARDEN CLUB CRAZY CARD PARTY

9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Windermere Town Hall, 520 Main St. Lunch, crazy card game, silent auction, raffles galore and plenty of laughs and sociability are always the hallmarks of the Windermere Garden Club’s Annual Crazy Card Party fundraiser. WEST ORANGE REPUBLICAN WOMEN FEDERATED MEETING

11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at the West Orange Country Club, 3300 West Orange Country Club Drive, Winter Garden. Special guest speaker is Michele Rigby Assad, author and former undercover officer in the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Operations. She trained as a counter-terrorism specialist and, after retirement, worked in Iraq with her husband with persecuted Christians. Buffet lunch, served at noon, costs $20. SPRING LAWN TUNE-UP

The synopsis of this Mimi's Community Theater production: Alexei comes to New York looking for a job when his career as a comedian stalls, and he unwittingly becomes entangled in an FBI operation. The agents believe he is a Russian assassin in cahoots with the staff at the diner, but they couldn't be farther from the truth. Jeff Dunne is the author, and Paul Hamrec is the director. WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

A MORNING FOR MATTHEW’S HOPE

This sip-and-shop-event supporting the homeless will showcase vendors such as Matilda Jane, LipSense, Perfectly Posh, Thirty-One Gifts, Usborne Books, Trades of Hope and Norwex. This mom-friendly event has supervised children’s activities and snacks.

 

MODERN ART: WHY SHOULD I LIKE IT?

Noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Winter Garden Art Association's SoBo Gallery, 127 S. Boyd St., Winter Garden. Session 1 of this three-part lecture series takes an in-depth look at the “why” behind modern art’s varied art movements, Explore the many “-isms” that fall under the umbrella of modern art, such as Cubism, Pointillism, Futurism and Abstract Expressionism. Plant St. Join the WGHF for a presentation and book signing for “My Darlings,” a collection of journal entries by Grace Mather-Smith when she arrived in a slumbering Oakland with her husband from Chicago in 1910. MARCEL DUCHAMP: FATHER OF MODERN ART

Noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Winter Garden Art Association's SoBo Gallery, 127 S. Boyd St., Winter Garden. Marcel Duchamp set the art world on fire when he submitted a urinal to an art show in 1917. When it was rejected, he used his art career to continually push the limits of the artistic elite and to call into question the very definition of art. Session 2 will dive into Duchamp’s fascinating art career and the powerful messages of his “Readymades” and discuss the Dada art movement and the way it changed modern art and the art world forever.Tickets are $10 for WGAA members and $15 for others. MID-FLORIDA MILERS WALKING CLUB

Community Editor Amy Quesinberry Price was born at the old West Orange Memorial Hospital and raised in Winter Garden. Aside from earning her journalism degree from the University of Georgia, she hasn’t strayed too far from her hometown and her three-mile bubble.
