Windermere Garden Club hosting plant show

The Windermere Garden Club is celebrating 62 years of existence with a two-day horticulture specialty flower show at Windermere Town Hall. The event is free and open to the community.

Club members will be submitting either a cutting or an actual plant and are eager to show off their hard work. Guests will be able to see groups of similar plants, such as orchids and hanging plants, and awards will be given to those that most closely match the species standards.

Six professionals from the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs will be judging all the participants.

Educational exhibits will be set up, as well.

The theme is “Remembering,” and the club is recognizing former members who were instrumental in keeping the garden club going. Awards will be presented to the past presidents in attendance.

This year’s officers are Bonnie Baum, president; Mary Black, first vice president; Sherri Ang, second vice president, Janet Sgamma, recording secretary; Jackie Rapport, corresponding secretary; and Dale Boardman, treasurer.

The Windermere Garden Club actively supports programs in the community. It provides scholarships to high-school students, supports the garden at Windermere Elementary and maintains the plantings around the historic schoolhouse in Windermere.

The club was organized in 1956 and was federated into Florida Garden Clubs in 1958. It also maintains membership in National Garden Clubs Inc.

Its purpose is to bring together residents of Windermere and the surrounding communities, including Bay Hill, Dr. Phillips, Winter Garden and Ocoee, to enhance the beauty of the area and to encourage conservation through education and action.

There are currently close to 50 active members from around West Orange County.
