Winter Garden approves $1.8M in road-improvement projects

Winter Garden plans to pursue a city wide street resurfacing project throughout the next two months.

During the Jan. 24 Winter Garden City Commission meeting, city leaders authorized a piggyback contract with The Middlesex Corporation, a Massachusetts-based construction company, for 14 asphalt-paving projects.

The contract, which totals $1,844,810, piggybacks off of an existing Orange County government contract with Middlesex to take advantage of its services at a similar price. The city has previously used Middlesex for street-resurfacing projects as well.

The first paving projects of the initiative took place on Monday, Feb. 11, with subsequent projects to follow on Feb. 18 and the week of spring break, from March 18 to 22. However, construction dates are tentative pending weather conditions, said Winter Garden Assistant City Manager Jon Williams.

The roadways selected include Stoneybrook Parkway, Story Road, Plant Street, Avalon Road, Palmetto Street, East Cypress Street, Florida Avenue, Newell Street, South Lakeview Avenue, Division Street and North Highland Avenue.

Periodic lane closures may be necessary, and all roads/streets will remain open to local traffic, Williams said.

• Stoneybrook Parkway (State Road 429 westbound to County Road 535)
• Stoneybrook Parkway (S.R. 429 eastbound to Lake Roberts subdivision)

Feb. 18

• West Plant Street (Park to 550’ West)
• Newell Street (Dillard St. to North Boyd St.)  – Paving on Newell will be limited to the hours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to minimize conflict with school-related traffic.
• South Lakeview Avenue (Smith St to Maple St.)
• Division Street (Lakeview Ave. to Bradford Park)
• North Highland Avenue (Newell St. to Tilden Road)

March 18 to March 22

• Story Road (Park St. to West Plant St.)
• West Plant (Lakeview Ave. to Avalon Road)
• Avalon Road (West Colonial Ave. to Plant St.)
• (Paving to be done the week of Spring Break in order to minimize conflict with school-related traffic)
