More than 6,500 students completed in the 2019 SkillsUSA Championships — a national showcase of career and technical education — and four local students returned with awards.
The event was held June 26-27 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Students demonstrated their technical skills, workplace skills and personal skills in 103 hands-on competitions including robotics, automotive technology, drafting, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking.
The Skill Point Certificate is a component of SkillsUSA's assessment program for career and technical education.
Rayton Li, a Windermere resident and a student at Orange Technical College - Mid-Florida Campus (Orlando), was awarded the SkillsUSA Championships high school silver medal in Residential Systems (IoT), as well as the Skill Point Certificate.
Others receiving certificates are students at Orange Technical College – Westside Campus and Winter Garden residents Cindy Guererro, in esthetics; Jesse Rigel, in welding sculpture; and Marisol Santana, in Job Skill Demonstration A.
Students were invited to the event to demonstrate their technical skills, workplace skills and personal skills in 103 hands-on competitions including robotics, automotive technology, drafting, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking. More than 1,100 industry judges and technical committee members participated this year.
A total of 1,122 gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to students. Many winners also received industry prizes, tools of their trade or scholarships. Skill Point Certificates were awarded in 72 occupational and leadership events. The Skill Point Certificate is a component of SkillsUSA's assessment program for career and technical education.
The championships are held annually for students in middle school, high school or college/postsecondary programs as part of the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. SkillsUSA is a nonprofit partnership of education and industry to strengthen the nation's skilled workforce.
