It was a battle of titans on Monday, Sept. 10, as an undefeated Dr. Phillips beat Windermere High 3-1 — handing the Wolverines their first loss of the volleyball season.
Despite a rally by Windermere (12-1, 2-1) toward the end of the opening set, the Panthers (4-0, 1-0) would hold off the Wolverines for a 25-19 win to start the game. In the second set the Wolverines would jump out to an early commanding lead, before the Panthers made a rally of their own — closing the gap to two points — before they would see themselves fall 25-19.
With the match tied up at 1-1, something had to give. The third set would see the Panthers and Wolverines trade blows left and right, leading to a narrow 25-21 win for the Panthers.
All that was left for the Panthers was to take the fourth set, and they'd be heading back to Dr. Phillips with the win. They did just that, as the Panthers battled it out with the Wolverines for the best set of the night — capping off the game with a thrilling 26-24 win.
For the Panthers, junior Alicia Virthe would finish with 17 kills, two aces and six digs, while fellow junior Alexis Distasio racked up 15 kills, one ace and eight digs. Lourdes Olivia Osuna would have every assist (54) for the Panthers, and Kaley Landis and Marika Virthe each had 10 kills apiece.
Meanwhile Taylor Head would lead the Wolverines with seven kills and 10 digs, while Cassidy Chambers had 11 digs and seven kills.
