After a month of uncertainty regarding whether or not high school sports would be able to return, the FHSAA announced Monday, April 20, that it was canceling all sporting events for the remainder of the spring season.

The final nail in the proverbial coffin came two days prior when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ announced Saturday, April 18, that schools would remain closed and continue distance learning throughout the rest of the academic year.

“The safety of our student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans is our top priority,” the FHSAA said in a press release. “With the evolving threat of the coronavirus (COVID-19), we must ensure that we do not contribute to the spread of this illness. We are deeply saddened for our student-athletes who have seen their seasons and/or high school careers end so abruptly.”

In the same press release, the FHSAA stated that under the guidance of the Florida Department of Education regarding grade level retention — and upon review of Florida Statutes and FHSAA Bylaws — no additional eligibility will be granted to spring-sport athletes.
