Down two with 6:16 left in the game — and with the Metro title on the line — the Ocoee Knights found a way to pull through late in their 55-48 win over Dr. Phillips Friday, Jan. 31.
The Knights (18-6) used a 13-0 run — which started off with a deep three by senior shooting guard David Green — over the span of four minutes to push ahead of the Panthers 48-37 with 1:42 left in the game. Green scored 11 of those 13 points, and finished with a game high 26 points to help lead the Knights to victory. Senior small forward Kordell Brown also added 13 points on the night, as well.
But the last few minutes of the game barely reflected what had happened throughout most of the contest, as the Knights and Panthers (15-7) duked it out in a competitive first half that saw the Knights go into the break up 22-18 after holding a one to two-point lead through most of the half.
In the third quarter the Panthers played their best stretch of the night, as they pushed ahead of the Knights by as many as seven points. The Panthers were helped along by senior guards Abdoulaye Thiam and Juneau Anicette, who scored 20 points and 10 points respectively.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, however, the Knights chipped away at the lead going into the final quarter before the 13-0 offensive outburst put Ocoee up for good — clinching the program's first Metro title and bumping up its win streak to nine-consecutive games in the process.
The Knights followed up their win over Dr. Phillips with a Saturday afternoon victory over Astronaut to move to 18-6, while the Panthers look to rebound against Poinciana Thursday, Feb. 6
