Despite cold, windy weather that made its way through the area Friday, Feb. 21, the Foundation Academy boys lacrosse team was firing on all cylinders as the Lions recorded their first win in program history with a 10-8 victory over Discovery High School.
The Lions (1-1) came into Friday night's game after falling 22-10 in their first game, and it didn't take them long to get off to a fast start. Almost immediately following the opening face-off, middie Travis Hutchison found pay dirt as he fired a shot past the Discovery (0-3) goalie — making it 1-0 and giving Hutchinson the first of his three goals on the night. Hutchison would also finish with three assists.
Discovery would respond accordingly by scoring back to back goals, before middie Jimmy George stopped the bleeding and scored the first of his two goals with 1:25 left in the first quarter.
The second quarter would see the Lions stretch out their lead to 6-3 before the halftime buzzer sounded — thanks in part to three straight goals between the 9:18 and 2:47 marks. During the quarter attackman Jacob Graziotti picked up his lone goal of the night, while attackman/middie Sam Zagame picked up two goals. Zagame would go on to score a team high of four goals and two assists.
Following a third quarter that saw only one goal (by Hutchison) that put the Lions up 7-3, both teams saw flurries of scoring in the fourth quarter with Foundation being outscored 5-3 by Discovery. Luckily for Foundation, the Spartans' rally would fall short and the Lions would hold on to celebrate a hard-earned victory.
Next up for the Lions is an away matchup against Ocoee (0-1) Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m.
