John Boston, 72, former teacher, coach and athletic director at West Orange High School, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, at his home in Leesburg, Florida.
Born in Pomona, California, John was the son of Fern and Arnold Boston. He graduated with a B.S. in education from Malone College in Canton, Ohio.

Upon graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in a military police unit until 1972. While living in Ohio, he taught elementary and junior high school students.

He moved his family to Ocoee, Florida in 1985. During his career at West Orange High School, John taught math and history and coached boys basketball. He eventually became the school’s athletic director and held that position for 18 years.
John’s interests included sports, raising beef cattle and showing American Quarter Horses. He was a past president of the Lake County Cattleman’s Association and was a current director for the Florida Quarter Horse Association.

He was inducted into both the Metro and West Orange Sports Hall of Fame.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Linda.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, of Leesburg, Florida; son, Christopher (Ayanna) of Brooklyn, New York; and grandsons, Kingston and Channing of Winter Garden, Florida.
A celebration of John’s life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at West Orange High School, 1625 Beulah Road, Winter Garden, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Shriner Hospital for Children or Cornerstone Hospice.
