Turnovers and missed opportunities were the name of the game for Legacy Charter in the Eagles' 24-6 loss at the hands of St. Edward's on Friday, Oct. 30.
After St. Edward's (4-0) began the night's scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run by Reed Sternberg less than four minutes into the game, Legacy's Wyatt Powell fumbled the ensuing kickoff to give the Pirates great field position at the Eagles' 19-yard line. A few minutes later the Pirates would score on a 1-yard run by Sternberg — the extra point would push the Pirates' lead to 14-0.
In the second quarter the Eagles (6-2) would get their first chance in the red zone, but a fumble would kill the drive at the Pirates' 9-yard line. Less than two minutes later St. Edwards would strike for a 75-yard touchdown pass to help build its lead to 21-0.
The Eagles would force a turnover themselves with a pick by Colby McClure with 7:19 left in the first half, but Legacy would again struggle on offense before punting the ball away.
Legacy would get one last chance in the red zone for the first half, after a blocked punt by Noah Velazquez was recovered by William Walker on the Pirates' 20. A few plays later, the Eagles would fail to come away with points on a failed fourth-down conversion.
St. Edward's would end its first half with a short field goal to give the Pirates a 24-0 lead.
In the second half, Legacy's defense would shutout the Pirates' offense, while the Eagles offense would pick up its only score of the game midway through the fourth quarter when quarterback Jayden Colon hit Jared Adams for a 5-yard touchdown. The following two-point conversion would fail, and the score of 24-6 would hold to the final buzzer.
Legacy will look to rebound next Friday, as the Eagles play host to Windermere Prep in the first round of the SSAC playoffs.
