Three late West Orange turnovers helped seal the Warriors' fate in a 31-24 season-opening loss to Boone on Friday, Sept. 25.
After going into the fourth quarter up 24-14 — which included a massive 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Matthew McDoom — the Braves (1-1) reeled off 17-unanswered points that started with a Brady Myers field goal with 9:11 left in the game.
What followed was a series of disasters for the Warriors (0-1), which were largely induced by Boone senior linebacker Landon Nedabylek — who snagged a pick-six with 6:37 to tie the game at 24-24, before intercepting West Orange quarterback Tyler Huff on the very next drive. That pick would lead to the go-ahead touchdown for Boone — a toss from Casey St. John to Javion Phelps with 2:43 left in the game.
Nedabylek would make one last game-deciding play when — with under two minutes to go — he robbed West Orange receiver Jeremi Rudolph of the ball to cap off a wild comeback for the Braves a week after they almost did the same thing to Dr. Phillips.
The Warriors will look to rebound next Friday — Oct. 2 — as they take on Lake Mary (2-0) on the road.
