A stymying defense and opportunity-driven offense gave the Dr. Phillips girls flag football team everything it needed to beat rival Windermere 21-0 in the Class 2A, District 5 championship game at Dr. Phillips High School Thursday, April 22.
The Panthers' offense was led by Olivia Cadiz, who hit Michelle Levitt and Mykiah Presley for touchdowns in the first half — the second of which was setup thanks to an interception by Ni'Kira Smith. After successful extra-point attempts — both to Chloe Matthews-Boultbee — the Panthers (10-5) went into the half up 14-0.
Windermere (11-7) would have its first solid drive of the half toward the end of the second quarter, but ultimately came up short.
The final score of the night came on another touchdown toss from Cadiz — her third of the night — to Levitt, which was followed by another successful extra-point attempt from Cadiz to Matthews-Boultbee to give the Panthers the 21-0 victory.
Despite the loss for Windermere, the Wolverines finished their year with the most wins in a season, while finishing district runner-up. Meanwhile Dr. Phillips moves on to state regional play where they'll take on Bloomingdale Wednesday, April 28.
