Garden Theatre, Mills family partner to launch new apprenticeship program

A new apprenticeship program in memory of William Daniel Mills is coming soon to the Garden Theatre.

The William Daniel Mills Apprenticeship Program is being launched by Harold and Rosy Mills, Daniel Mills’ parents, to honor their son, who died last year.

The program is set to launch this summer and potentially expand to other arts organizations in Central Florida. It will serve young, diverse artists between the ages of 13 and 22.

“We are honored that the Mills family entrusted Garden Theatre to create this new program,” said Nick Bazo, the Garden Theatre’s education director. “This partnership will provide access and opportunities for young people in our community and grow tomorrow’s artists. What an amazing way to honor Daniel’s memory.”

Program applicants will be required to submit an application and go through an interview or audition process. Accepted apprentices can select from five areas of theater to focus on — performance, directing, design, technical work and education. Application information will be announced soon; check back via the Garden Theatre’s website.

Apprentices will be able to take Garden Theatre education master classes, camps and classes — as well as attend rehearsals, performances and other events — at no cost. They’ll also be considered for paid opportunities working on main-stage productions at the theater.

“Theatre brought joy to Daniel’s life, and the study of theatre was his passion,” the Mills family said. “He committed himself to learning techniques, styles and ideologies. He was a true student of the trade. This program’s education and experiential learning focus is a wonderful way to honor our beautiful Daniel.”
