The West Orange High girls basketball team saw its season come to an end in a 53-42 loss at the hands of Colonial Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Class 7A region quarterfinals.
Almost a week after claiming the district title against Dr. Phillips, West Orange (18-9) got off to a slow start as the Grenadiers (16-9) went on a 7-0 run to start the game, before the Warriors finally managed to score their first bucket five minutes into the first quarter.
The Warriors would chip away at the lead and eventually tie the game on two separate occasions, but after being knotted up at 16-16 the Grenadiers finished the half strong — going into the break up 26-17.
The lead for the Grenadiers would blossom to as high as 14 points, before the Warriors got to within four points in the fourth quarter. A combination of turnovers, struggles at the free throw line and a strong finish for the Grenadiers would lead to a 53-42 win for the visitors.
In the loss the Warriors were led in scoring by senior guard Jania James, who picked up 11 points. Meanwhile junior guard Ajalon "AJ" Gillard and freshman Jasmine Bocca each added on eight points each.
