Garden Theatre postpones 'Beauty and the Beast,' announces 'Godspell'

The Garden Theatre's production of "Beauty and the Beast" will have to wait until the theater's 2021-22 season.

Theater staff announced Thursday, Jan. 21, that "Godspell" will replace "Beauty and the Beast" this spring. "Godspell" will run as part of the theater's 2020-21 season, from April 22 to May 23.

"Garden Theatre remains committed to presenting our highly anticipated production of 'Beauty and the Beast,' when we hope our strict COVID-19 precautions will no longer be necessary, and circumstances allow for a safe, fully-realized production of this grand and magical story," theater officials wrote on social media.

"Godspell" is a musical composed by Stephen Schwartz with the book by John-Michael Tebelak. In the musical,  Jesus and his followers gather to share parables from the biblical book of Matthew, celebrating messages of kindness, tolerance and love. The parables are interspersed with music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns.

The musical's rock score includes the international hit "Day by Day," and its final notes dissolve into the Last Supper and the crucifixion.
