A big second half for the Windermere Prep girls soccer team was more than enough to seal up a 3-0 win over Foundation Academy at home Thursday, Jan. 28.
In the first half the Lakers (9-2) had plenty of opportunities on goal, but a combination of overshot balls and stellar goalkeeping by Lions goalie Avery Bangsund — who finished the night with 24 saves — helped the Lions (6-6-1) keep the home side in check. The Lakers best chance to score in the opening half came when junior Courtney Mogauro was taken down in the box for a penalty kick, before sending her shot wide.
After weathering the Lakers' onslaught in the first half, things got bad quickly for the Lions in the second half when junior Giselle Torres knocked in a loose ball to put the Lakers up 1-0 less than two minutes into the half.
What followed were goals by Mogauro less than seven minutes later, and a goal for sophomore Brielyn Knowles — who terrorized the Lions' backline all afternoon — with 25 minutes left in the game. Senior Isabel Teixeira, freshman Camila Barni and eighth grader Rhea Gupta would each record an assist on the afternoon.
Next up for both teams are the district playoffs, with the Lions taking to the road to face All Saints' Academy Tuesday, Feb. 2, while the Lakers will take on a team that is to be determined Thursday, Feb. 4.
