Winter Garden-based technology company Riegl USA Inc. is planning an expansion that has nearby residents concerned.

The company, which produces laser scanners, rangefinders and distance meters, is requesting a permit from the City of Winter Garden to build a helipad on its 19-acre facility at 14707 West Colonial Drive.

“While I am very appreciative that Riegl chose Winter Garden as their HQ site location, the area is surrounded by residential homes, chiefly, Brandy Creek and Brandy Oaks,” said Commissioner Ron Mueller.

According to Mueller, residents of both communities expressed concern after a recent series of low helicopter flights in the area. “They all objected to the helipad and helicopter operations so close to their homes,” he said. “They expressed worries about safety and that the noise is unbearable.”

Representatives from Riegl USA Inc. could not be reached for comment.

Residents will be able to voice their opinions during a public meeting to be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov 30, in City Hall, 300 W. Plant Street.
