A special club at Ocoee High School is coming together with the Zebra Coalition for a day of LGBTQ+ awareness and education.
Prism Knights is Ocoee's Gay-Straight-Trans Alliance Club. The club is a safe-space for students to express and learn about the LGBTQ+ community. The club is open to all students regardless of their sexual orientation and encourages members to advocate not only for themselves, but for others.
This week, Prism Knights is hosting Orlando's Zebra Coalition, a network of organizations which provide services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and all LGBTQ+ youth ages 13 to 24. The coalition assists young people facing homelessness, bullying, isolation from their families, and physical, sexual and drug abuse with individualized programs to guide them to recovery and stability, according to the non-profits website.
Established speakers from the coalition will be in attendance and will discuss issues that the LGBTQ+ community face and provide resources to help.
"A lot of our students deal with these issues within our school and at home so it's beneficial for the students to know they have this option if they have issues," said sponsor for the club, Ashley Gecewicz.
Snacks and drinks will also be available.
The presentation will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 1:30 p.m. in room 527.
The club generally meets on Tuesday after school in room 544. For more information, visit Ocoee High School's website.
