Students in the Students Serving Soldiers club at West Orange High School are celebrating Halloween by giving back.

The club is collecting excess Halloween candy and shipping it to deployed troops overseas.

SSS said the Treats for Troops event is a great way to help thank soldiers for their service and give them a reminder of their home.

"Everyone needs something sweet in their life," SSS said. "The soldiers have fought so hard for our country and have given so much effort into helping us."

Now in its second year, the club members said they got the idea for the event and collecting candy when they realized how much extra candy goes to waste.

"We hope this event will show the importance of giving back," SSS said.

The main organizers of the event are Amber Matlach, Caroline Gordon and Trenton Campbell.

Those who wish to donate candy can drop it off in room 540. The deadline for donations is Friday, Nov. 5 at 2:30 p.m.
