Orlando Shakes announces new COVID-19 safety protocols

Beginning Oct. 1, Orlando Shakes will require a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination to attend performances or special events.

The theater company joins other Florida venues, including the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, which we told you about here, in requiring updated safety protocols.

Managing Director Douglas Love-Ramos announced the decision Friday, Sept. 17. 

“We strongly believe that this is the right thing to do at this time,” Love-Ramos said. “This not only allows for our guests to be — and feel — more safe but also allows for us to remain open and provide live entertainment throughout these uncertain times.”

The updated safety protocols will require all attendees ages 12 and older to wear a face mask, regardless of vaccination status, and to show documentation of a recent, within 72 hours of attendance, negative COVID-19 test by a medical provider or certified testing center. The final dose of the vaccine must be administered at least two weeks before the show.

Rapid antigen tests also will be acceptable if they are performed within 48 hours before showtime. 

“We long for the day that we won’t need to worry about COVID and its restrictions,” Love-Ramos said. "But until then, we must do our part to help contain the spread of COVID and its variants, to keep our guests, staff, volunteers and artists as safe as possible.”
