The city of Winter Garden recognized the winners of the Water Conservation Drop Savers Poster Contest at the April 13 City Commission meeting, immediately after Mayor John Rees proclaimed the month of April as Florida’s Water Conservation Month.
The Florida Section of the American Water Works Association sponsors the contest every year.
Students in grades K-12 are encouraged to create a poster depicting a water conservation idea in slogan form or drawing form. The contest allows students to promote awareness and the importance of water conservation in their daily lives.
A panel of judges selected the winning posters based on the following criteria: message, creativity and originality, not just artistic ability. The winning posters then moved on for judging at the state level.
This year, 82 students participated in the Winter Garden contest.
First place awards went to Bailey McLean, Foundation Academy, and Carlin Whitney, West Orange High School, in the state competition. River Estes, StarChild Academy, also received second place recognition at the state level.
Other winners are Liam Jesse and Emily Morgan Schneck from StarChild Academy.
Three posters also received Honorable Mention recognition: Spencer Marcus, Oakland Avenue Charter; Christopher Drummond, Drummond Home School; and Autumn Tucker, Lakeview Middle School.
