Orlando Ballet is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the premier of a new production of "The Nutcracker."

The new rendition, created by artistic director Jorden Morris, includes new choreography, eye-popping sets, costumes and lighting.

Morris said he has spent three years developing an entirely new production of the holiday classic, while still preserving the story and, of course, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic music.

“Creating any new ballet from scratch is a massive undertaking,” Morris said in a press release. “The Nutcracker carries a special responsibility of protecting its traditions and all that is loved about this ballet. We’ve taken great care to preserve the traditions while creating an imaginative and memorable holiday experience for everyone.”

Cheryl Collins, executive director, said after 30 years, it was time to create a new production.

“The Nutcracker is part of every ballet company’s DNA, but it’s also part of our community, which is why we chose to make this investment in creating an entirely new production," Collins said in the press release. "It’s another way for us to thank our community for its support as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. It is all just so exciting.”

The performance was designed with the help of an elite team of artists, including Lisa Vinzant, associate artistic director; Robert Perdziola, who designed the new costumes and sets; and Joseph Walls, who helped create the lighting designs.

Performances for the new show will run from Dec. 8 to 24.

Tickets start at $29, and a special pre-season ticket sales event was held Tuesday, July 25.

Groups of 10 people or more will receive up to 25% off their tickets.
