More details have been released regarding a Monday, May 8, car crash that killed a 71-year-old man in Horizon West.
Florida Highway Patrol has identified the driver in the crash as a 22-year-old male from Oviedo. The victim was from Sanford.
The crash occurred at about 11 a.m. in the Independence community. According to FHP reports, the driver was traveling eastbound on Wild Blackberry Trail above the posted speed limit. He failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the roadway. He then struck a mailbox, tree, sign and light pole. The vehicle continued and struck the victim, who was on the sidewalk.
The vehicle then crashed through the columns holding up the porch roof of a nearby house.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert with serious injuries. He is now in stable condition.
The crash remains under investigation.

An Oviedo man killed a 71-year-old man when he lost control of his car Monday, May 8, in the Independence community in Horizon West.
According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, at about 11:04 a.m. the driver was traveling eastbound on Wild Blackberry Trail above speed limit when he lost control of a 2012 Toyota Camry. He struck a mailbox, tree and light pole before hitting the victim — who was pronounced dead at the scene — before crashing onto the front porch of a nearby house.
The driver was transported to the Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert with serious injuries, according to the press release.
Traffic homicide investigators still are working on the scene of the accident, and the crash remains under investigation.
