The nonprofit Bears Who Care organization is hosting its sixth annual OktoBEARfest 5K Fun Run & Walk Sunday, Oct. 22, in Horizon West. It will start and end in the parking lot of Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital, 17000 Porter Road, Winter Garden.
The 5K begins at 7:30 a.m., and the kids run is at 9. Participants can walk or run in person or virtually, and 5K finishers receive a medal, T-shirt, goody bag, race bib and certificate. Kids run participants get a medal, goody bag, race bib and certificate.
The family-friendly event includes activities, live entertainment, interactive sponsor booths, a scavenger hunt and prize giveaways.
This year’s event has become even more significant because Kari Schmitz, one of the Bears Who Care co-founders, has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
Bears Who Care provides teddy bears and books to children in need throughout the community.
Registration is $45 in advance, $50 the day of the race for the 5K and $30 and $35 for the kids run. Additional race information can be found at bearswhocare.org/oktobearfest. To register, visit runsignup.com/Race/Register/?raceId=63809.
